@@@ How Dragons’ Den alumnus Greenlid plans to keep Canadian Olympians safe from Zika carrying mosquitoes Where are they now? FP Entrepreneur sent out its Dragons?€? Den writer to report back on how some of the startups that did deals on the CBC reality show in the New Balance 1300 past seasons have fared since. For the next two months, we ll feature their stories. When brothers Morgan and Jackson Wyatt first appeared on Season 9 of Dragons Den in the spring of 2015, they were just launching Greenlid, a compostable compost bin. ?€?We had a prototype and had just completed a crowdfunding campaign to see if the idea was good,?€? Morgan Wyatt said. After landing a deal with David Chilton and Arlene Dickinson and much needed financing, Greenlid started production that November. Chilton and Dickinson helped get Greenlid into Home Hardware and Home Depot, its first retailers, and continue to be actively involved. Dickinson?€?s Venture Communications revamped Greenlid?€?s packaging. Now, the brothers are preparing to launch another Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign to get their latest invention off the ground ?€? biodegradable mosquito traps ?€? which is being piloted to combat Zika virus and Dengue fever. Then and now In its first year of operation, Greenlid generated about $100,000 in sales of its compost bins. Today, it?€?s approaching $1 million. It has also added Canadian Tire, Rona, London Drugs, Sears, Sobeys, Safeway and Whole Foods to its list of retailers. The product is in about 2,500 stores and will soon be sold in about 400 Loblaws stores. They continue to add retailers in Canada and the U.S. ?€?We just came back from Lowe?€?s head office in North Carolina and they?€?ve agreed to launch us across the U.S.,?€? Morgan New Balance 1300 pas cher Wyatt said. Related Shortly after closing the deal with the dragons, Wyatt, who has a PhD in chemical biology, started work on the mosquito traps. ?€?The Australian Health Authority contacted me because they were interested in finding a biodegradable container to use as a mosquito trap to help them fight Dengue fever outbreaks,?€? he said. ?€?I was able to use the same technology we use in our compost bins.?€? Once water is added to the trap, which is coated with a layer of insecticide, it?€?s ready for mosquitoes, which like to lay their eggs in free-standing water. The Wyatts?€? invention is an improved, less expensive alternative to the plastic traps currently being used that need to be collected after about six weeks. ?€?At that point, the insecticide wears off and the traps become breeding grounds for the mosquitoes,?€? Wyatt said. We have an opportunity to make a big impact if it?€?s widely accepted ?€?When you?€?re setting out 10,000 containers a year, it?€?s not very practical to have to go out and clean and collect them.?€? As well, at 10 to 20 per cent of the cost of traditional traps, the biodegradable mosquito trap is a more affordable solution for developing countries. After 18 months of trials, the Australian government placed its first order this year. What?€?s next Morgan and Wyatt are heading to South America, where, in partnership with the Canadian Olympic team, they will be placing their traps around the Canadian Olympic House and its training facility in Rio de Janeiro for this summer?€?s games. They will also be running trials with health authorities addressing the Zika virus in Brazil and Colombia, as well as in New Balance 576 Hawaii, which just had a Dengue fever outbreak. ?€?There is no real treatment or cure for Dengue fever or Zika,?€? Wyatt said. The approach has been to control the spread of these diseases with spray insecticide, which is detrimental to the environment and has a short-term effect, he said, noting mosquito-borne illnesses are the leading cause of death in the world.?€?We have an opportunity to make a big impact if it?€?s widely accepted,?€? he said. While the plan is to work with governments and countries dealing with the Zika virus and Dengue fever first, the entrepreneurs see a market selling the traps to consumers in North America for their homes and cottages. Development also continues on Greenlid s compostable compost bin, which will be available in a large family size format this fall. The pair hope to become leaders in the composting space and make the biodegradable mosquito traps the standard for mosquito and vector control, just as mosquito nets have become the standard to prevent malaria. ?€?There are no other biodegradable mosquito traps available,?€? says Wyatt. ?€?The Indiegogo campaign will help us fund our trials and regulatory filings. For every trap purchased in North America through the crowdfunding, we are going to be giving one to one of the developing countries we?€?re working with. It?€?s a TOMS Shoes approach and I think that?€?s how we are going to always operate our commercial business in North America, to help decrease the cost in developing areas. In that way, it?€?s a win-win.?€?
